2016 Nissan Titan XD

New for 2016

The Titan XD is an all-new model that’s part of Nissan’s redesigned Titan full-size truck range.

Beyond What's Expected

The Nissan Titan hasn’t been redesigned in about a decade, so you could say it’s about time. But when it came to launching a second-generation Titan, Nissan decided to not just update its full-size pickup, but try to create a whole new category of truck. The 2016 Nissan Titan XD offers a combination of features never before seen in a truck, filling a niche none of its competitors have ever thought to exploit.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2016 Nissan Titan XD breaks new ground by essentially creating a new segment for full-size trucks. It offers the capability of a heavy-duty three-quarter ton rig, but with the price, fuel economy, and drivability of a smaller half-ton.

At the heart of Nissan’s segment-busting strategy is a brand-new Cummins 5.0-liter turbodiesel engine. Diesel engines are unusual in half-ton trucks, but Nissan wanted to give the Titan XD capability beyond what is normally expected, as well as improved fuel-economy figures that will hold up in real-world driving. The Titan XD is available in rear-wheel drive of four-wheel drive configurations, with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The diesel V8 produces a titanic (pun intended) 310 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque. That allows the Titan XD to tow up to 12,314 pounds, and carry a payload of up to 2,091 pounds, when properly equipped. Helping to make hauling easier are features like available trailer sway control, a tow/haul mode, and a trailer light check system.

In addition to the novel diesel engine, Nissan will also offer the Titan XD with a gasoline 5.6-liter Endurance V8 beginning this spring. Based on the engine from the previous-generation Titan, the Endurance makes 390 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque, and is backed by a seven-speed automatic. Like the diesel engine, it will be offered with rear rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. EPA fuel-economy ratings aren’t available yet for either engine.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is a full-size pickup truck available for now only as a four-door crew cab, with seating for five or six. There are five trim levels, priced starting from $40,290.*

Standard equipment on the base Titan XD S includes a 40/20/40 split-folding front bench seat, 5.0-inch color display, USB port, Bluetooth® streaming audio, hands-free text messaging, NissanConnectSM with Mobile Apps, and a six-speaker audio system, among other features.

The Titan XD SV builds on the S by incorporating its standard features, and adding things like cloth seats, floor carpeting, SirusXM® satellite radio, overhead console with sunglass holder, interior mood lighting, chrome exterior trim, trailer sway control, and trailer sway control.

Next up is the off-road oriented Pro-4X. This model comes standard with BSW all-terrain tires mounted on special 18-inch alloy wheels, Bilstein® off-road shocks, electronic locking rear differential, lower radiator skidplate, hill descent control, LED projector headlights, and Nissan Intelligent Key. Other features include front captain’s chairs, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, NissanConnectSM with Navigation and 7.0-inch touchscreen, tow mirrors, trailer brake controller, and trailer light check system.

The Titan XD SL takes things in a more luxurious direction, with features like leather seats, heated front seats, power tilt and telescoping steering column, a memory system for the driver’s seat and steering column, 20-inch alloy wheels, proximity-activated puddle lights, a Rockford Fosgate® 12-speaker premium audio system, NissanConnect Services, and other equipment.

The top Titan XD model is the Platinum Reserve, which incorporates all of the applicable standard features from the other models, and adds premium leather seats with “Platinum Reserve” branding, heated steering wheel, chrome exhaust tip, model-specific wheels and badging, two-tone paint, wood trim, and pre-wiring for a DVD entertainment system.

Design

Lots of carmakers try to make bold statements with their trucks, and Nissan is no different. The 2016 Titan XD’s exterior styling conveys the power of the (gasoline or diesel) V8 engine under its hood. The bold front end is unique to XD models, and was designed to resemble a mask, according to Nissan. It certainly gives the Titan an imposing presence.

While the Titan XD definitely looks the part of a truck on the outside, its interior is more refined and car like. It has the same “NASA-inspired” Zero Gravity seats that debuted in the Altima sedan. Nissan says these seats enhance posture to make long-distance drives more comfortable.

The overall design of the interior should look familiar to anyone hopping out of a Nissan passenger car, too, although Nissan has made the most of this full-size truck’s spacious dimensions. Front and rear storage have been increased 33 percent and 28 percent, respectively, over the outgoing Titan. The center console can hold a 15-inch laptop, and there’s a new lockable storage bin under the rear seats.

To some, the bed of a pickup truck is just a box, but not Nissan. It tricked the Titan’s bed out with tons of available features, including spray-on bedliner, LED lighting, 120-volt power outlet, dual lockable “Titan Box” storage cubbies, and the Utili-track Bed Channel System of tie-down cleats.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Nissan Titan XD includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, and a full array of airbags. Optional features include front and rear parking sensors, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, and RearView Monitor or AroundView Monitor with Moving Object Detection camera systems.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is a new kind of full-size truck. It's powerful, easy to drive, and boasts a robust list of technologies, all of which place the Titan into a league of its own.
