2016 Nissan Murano

The Fashionable Choice

Sometimes, it’s simply better to play to your strengths. And that’s exactly what the 2016 Nissan Murano does. A Sylvester Stallone, mountain-climbing SUV this is not. No, no. The third-generation Murano was built for fashion-conscious drivers looking for that extra kick in their cappuccino.

While much of the attention will center on the Murano’s handsome good looks, to do so would be a disservice to a model that incorporates stellar design inside and out, and that provides a true and luxurious experience for both passengers and drivers.

Performance

Supplying motivation to the 2016 Nissan Murano is a 3.5-liter engine that serves up 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variably Intelligent Xtronic transmission means virtually instant acceleration and gearless shifting—all while sending power to the front wheels. However, all-wheel drive is available should you desire that extra level of assuredness on slippery roads or in colder climates.

While the 2016 Murano’s 3.5-liter V6 carries over from the previous generation, Nissan has taken the time to tweak a number of aspects. That, in conjunction with improved aerodynamics, weight reduction, and a drag coefficient comparable to some sports cars, gives the Murano some impressive moves.

Of course, a modern crossover SUV’s worth is judged as much on its efficiency as it is its style. Thankfully, the 2016 Murano returns an impressive 28 mpg highway/21 mpg city regardless if you choose front- or all-wheel drive.*

Features

The 2016 Nissan Murano starts at $29,660, ** and is available in four trims: S, SV, SL, and Platinum.

Despite such an agreeable starting price, S models come well-stocked with a wide array of features. Standard niceties include 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and Bluetooth® audio streaming.

Also standard, and sure to appeal to tech enthusiasts, is Nissan Intelligent Key® with push button ignition, and vivid seven-inch Color Advanced Drive-Assist® Display. The former allows for a simple knock the trunk or door handle to unlock them, while the latter displays vital driving information, such as available turn-by-turn navigation, caller ID, or other safety features.

Stepping up to the SV includes all previously mentioned content (where applicable) and adds a number of extra features, such as an eight-way power driver’s seat, remote engine start system, front and rear passenger, and NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps, which includes a touch-screen color display, voice recognition, maps with voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, SiriusXM® services, and built-in smartphone apps.

For an added dose of refinement, SL models upgrade to leather-appointed heated front seats, also added to the mix is a dynamic 360-degree Around View® monitor, and Bose® premium audio system. SL models also provide adjustable ambient interior lighting to ensure the mood is always right inside the 2016 Murano.

And finally, the crème-de-la-crème Murano Platinum builds upon all previous trims and gets 20-inch machine-finished aluminum alloy wheels, LED beam headlights, climate-controlled front seats, and heated steering wheel and rear seats.

Design

The 2016 Nissan Murano is an attractive proposition for drivers looking to make a bold statement without seeming pretentious.

In truth, “loud” designs have become somewhat de rigueur in the crossover SUV space, but the third-generation Murano's stunning, windswept design actually serves a real purpose (other than just being really, really good looking). Indeed, it’s incredibly fuel efficient and sports a rather remarkable drag coefficient that is right up there with some of the most advanced sports cars.

Inside, the Murano’s “zero gravity” seating in all four outboard seating positions suggests a vehicle designed for empty-nesters or at the very least smaller families. An available panoramic sunroof heightens the interiors style, while a V-shaped center stack mirrors the exterior’s grille.

In addition to excellent trim and material quality, drivers and passengers will find plenty of space aboard the SS Murano. There’s even plenty of room for stowaways, groceries, golf clubs, or whatever you prefer in the rear cargo hold, with 39.6 cubic feet of trunk space with the second row of seats in place, or a voluminous 70 cubic feet with the rea seatback folded down.

Safety

The 2016 Murano sports a suite of standard safety features designed to inspire confidence behind the wheel. Standard safety features include vehicle dynamic control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a litany of driver and passenger airbags. A rearview camera is also standard across the mode lineup.

Furthermore, the Murano’s safety systems arsenal can be further outfitted with a number of available technologies, which include Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Forward Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Warning, Around View Monitor, and Intelligent Cruise Control.

Verdict

The 2016 Nissan Murano is a stylish crossover SUV that is flashy, fun, and fuel efficient. It offers an unprecedented level of comfort and refinement, and pushes the envelope in regards to what a crossover SUV can and should do.
